Dance your way through your New Years Resolutions - Find Belly Dance Classes in Durham!
Find a Solution to Your Resolution!
Last night was New Years Eve and the figure of 12% was given as the percentage of successful New Years Resolutions.
As many of us recover from a hectic holiday season we all start thinking about being the best versions of ourselves as we head into the promise of the New Year. This often means that we think about ways to keep fit, loose weight and tone up. Most importantly, I would argue, we need to find ways to do all of this and have fun, form friendships and keep the feeling of promise going long into the years to come as it is these rewards which give so much more than a lower reading on the scales!
How do you find all this? The answer is look for it - try lots of new things and see what makes you happy!
Think outside the box - Join a book club but walk to the meetings, like the idea of exercise with glamour try Burlesque, need something thats low impact but dont fancy aquafit try bellydancing!
Bellydancing is the dance form where I first found the sheer enjoyment of doing something for myself, it has over the years given me a great support, both in the people that I dance with and in the freedom that dancing provides. It has become such an important part of my life that I now teach dancing full time!
There are classes all over the country and within County Durham and the North East there are teachers who have different styles again I would say try them all til you find the class that makes you excited to leave the house on a dark, wet february eve because it gives you that 'lift'.
If you would like to begin your New Years Resolution quest with bellydance just get in touch and come and join one of the Jewels of the East open level class!

Bellydance Class FAQs! Join Us for Belly Dance Classes in Durham!
What can I expect at a belly dance class with Jewels of the East?
The regular classes are open level and tailored to you!
For your first class arrive 5-10 mins early so that you can fill in your 'fitness to dance' questionaire and discuss any particular requirements that you may have.
The class starts with a gentle warm up using bellydance moves and techniques.
We then up the pace to raise your heart rate using footwork, shimmies and percussive moves.
After a stretch out we concentrate on technique which we then use in the class choreography.
Each week we add to the choreography then have a cool down and stretch.
What do we do with the Choreographies?
We perform!
Each term we get together at different venues with teachers and classes from accross the region and perform for each other!
Its a great way to feel part of a belly dance community, to see other styles of bellydance and to have fun!

What Should I Wear to the Class
Something that you can move in - for example leggings/jogging bottoms/flowing skirt and a vest t-shirt.
It is best to wear a t-shirt that allows me to see your body movement.

Jewels of the East Will Add Shimmy and Sparkle to your Event
As the nation prepares to watch the Royal Wedding many of you are planning events of your own. So if you have a wedding, hen party, birthday, surprise party or family event coming up why not book a bellydancer to bring the wow factor!
If you would like to hire us to dance below are some details to consider:
What sort of belly dancing would you like us to perform and to which styles of music?
We can dance set choreographies and improvise to a variety of Arabic, world and western music.
How long would you like us to dance for? When would you like us to dance?
We can dance as people arrive, during a meal or at any point during your event!
What sort of sound system is available?
For smaller venues a powerful stereo should be ok but please bear in mind that it will need to carry over the
volume of any background noise (e.g. people eating). Organizers will need to provide a PA for large venues.
How much space will there be to dance?
We can dance around tables, audiences, on stage or a mixture if suitable.
Will there be anywhere for us to get changed and leave our bags?
A small area to prepare is ideal

Jewels of the East Class Puts a Spell on the Audience
Friday the 22nd of April saw the Jewels of the East Class troupe "Eastern Promises" add shimmy and sparkle to Vanessa's Hafla in Seaton Carew. It was a fabulous event with a wonderful supportive atmosphere and beautiful perfomances. For some it was their debut performance and everyone came off stage smiling and asking when the next chance to perform was going to be!
The Jewels of the East burlesque troupe "Moonlight Minxes" brought drama and excitement to the night with their moulin rouge themed routine.
